We have announced our plan to fight waste, fraud, and abuse by entities receiving local government funds. This plan will strengthen internal controls by counties, cities, and school districts, and help them address pandemic-related financial risks.
This plan was developed by myself and my team, working closely with the input we received from state legislators, non-profit and for-profit leaders, and local and county officials.
Government policies put in place during the pandemic have created new risks that our local governments need to address in their internal controls.
Local governments engage routinely with non-profit and for-profit entities through grants and contracts. The majority of these grantees and contractors ARE GOOD STEWARDS of taxpayers’ dollars. However, as recent scandals (such as Feeding Our Future) have demonstrated, a few bad actors can result in expansive fraud if there is not adequate oversight.
